The goals of the Council, as outlined in the Strategic Plan, are to foster research and research training in nursing and midwifery, to influence and set research priorities and, to build research capacity. Schools of Nursing throughout Australia and New Zealand are engaged in a wide range of research activities. Research Advisory Group

The Council has established a Research Advisory Group and their terms of reference are to:
1. Advise Council with respect to relevant policy issues relating to national and international research initiatives including funding announcements, policy decisions, and assessment mechanisms;
2. Develop, in collaboration with Council, both short-and long-term trans-Tasman strategies for advancing nursing and midwifery research;
3. Develop, in collaboration with Council, strategies relating to targeted, and sustained, profiling of nursing and midwifery research in the media;
4. Facilitate the development of programmatic research through identification of capacity building initiatives, targeting funding etc.;
5. Represent Council at research fora, and relevant government eg DEST, NH&MRC, ARC, HRCNZ, advisory and consultative meetings; and,
6. Facilitate recognition of the contribution nursing and midwifery research makes to social innovation.
