The development of a pre-registration nursing competencies

assessment tool for use in universities across Australia

This project dveloped a standardised competency assessment tool that can be used across Australian universities delivering nursing programs that lead to eligibility to register as a nurse within their state/territory. This tool is based on a documentary analysis of curriculum documents, competency assessment tools, and skills taught within 36 universities in Australia, and a review of the literature. Modified Delphi rounds, involving approximately 800 nurses, were used to refine and clarify the skills areas that should be assessed through a competency assessment tool for nursing. Modified nominal groups then defined exemplars that would assist in interpreting the ANMC competencies so that they could be readily used for assessment by clinicians in practice. The competency assessment tool developed through this project is currently being piloted at our partner institutions. Future work will be undertaken to facilitate the implementation and operationalisation of this tool. This project has advanced existing knowledge through the development of a number of exemplars and supportive guidance for assessors of clinicians in practice with regards to the interpretation of the ANMC National Competencies for the Registered Nurse (2006). In addition, it has identified skills that an entry-level practitioner could be reasonably expected to demonstrate on graduation. Download the full report (10.4mb) or the tool kit (1.6mb)

Nurse Workforce Futures: Development and application of a model of demand for and supply of graduates of Australian and New Zealand pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses to 2010

Nurse Workforce Futures, updates our earlier report, Australian nurse supply and demand to 2006, and includes New Zealand data. The report develops and applies a model of the demand for and supply of graduates of Australian and New Zealand pre-registration nursing and midwifery courses to the year 2010.

CORRECTION NOTE

The projections for Western Australia in Nurse Workforce Futures (Preston 2006) require significant amendment because of incorrect figures for that state in the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force 2003 (AIHW 2005). The Institute is currently correcting those figures and those in Nursing and Midwifery Labour Force 2004 (AIHW 2006), and ensuring that the figures for 2005 are correct when they are published shortly. Corrected figures are likely to lead to the WA projections (‘standard’ assumptions) of surpluses through to 2010 becoming shortfalls (or a small surplus). Detail will be provided on this site after the Institute has published new estimates.
